My mum, okay I will put my hand up and say she was not a great cook.  She could burn Mary Baker's buns, and her frying Veggie Roll was so hard it could be used as a weapon.  My dad learnt to cook in the navy, so did most of it, as long as it was fried or boiled he had it.  Anyway, my mum did do French Toast, I remember it was sweetened with sugar in the egg mixture and the bread left to soak in the mixture.
