I've just watched this, which was shown today - -

I went straight onto full screen on my PC, watched nearly 8 minutes of video, decided to order at the Big Deal price of £18, only to find it is nearly £25.

So rang CS, they said the £18 offer finished in April (I'm amazed I didn't see it then as I always look at big deals and especially gadgets and torches) but they said there was a note below the video to say the price may be different.

Well, there was, but as I'd gone straight to full screen I never saw it.

I asked if a supervisor could sell it to me for £18, but got nowhere (they usually compromise).

I was going to leave one at OH's to keep in the sun on a windowsill, so it would always be charged up (unlike her other torches which aren't solar). I invariably need a torch when I am there, usually to repair something, and hers are invariably flat!

I found the whole situation to be disappointing and a bit underhand.

If they were less short-sighted (and greedy), they could have at least met you halfway after you bothered to call them, and offered you free postage, so £24.96 instead of the big deal price of £21.95 (£18.00 + £2.95). I don’t know if you’d be happy with that but I’m thinking it’s only another £1.50 for each lamp.

Yoohoo, Strato! The Bell & Howell set of 5 lights, item 728984. Any good?

I don't need floodlight strength, just enough light for me to open a gate latch after dark.

Thanks.

Thanks, but I bought a set of these (3 I think) many years ago. They are a good idea.

I haven't used them recently, but now you have reminded me about them I've just thought of a place where one would be very useful.

I bought the set of three ages ago. I use them inside the cupboard under the stairs and inside my wardrobe. The remaining one is not in use at the moment. I used to have that one at the front door but, since buying a motion activated security light which lights everything up amazingly, that light is back in a cupboard.

I think alter ego was asking your opinion, Strato, with a view to getting them herself. Come on, answer the question, man! AE needs you!

I'm not sure if the latest ones have changed since I bought mine years ago.

They are very good, very bright, easily adjustable, and the magnetic base sticks to steel surfaces.

I was surprised the demo kept saying it has to be completely dark before they will activate, I didn't find that with mine.

I have just set one up on the steel notice board in my kitchen, to light up a dark area. But as it is daylight, I can't test how dark it has to be to come on, I need it to come on at early dusk, but won't know until tonight.

Very thorough review, as we’ve come to expect from you. I am interested myself now. I hadn’t even considered that I might need such a product 24 hours ago! Could it be that it’s because I don’t?

I bought them because they were novelty lights, but also looked very useful and versatile.

The torches and lights I collect either have novelty aspects, or are extremely high quality engineering (and power), or have a specific use.

They are quite small, so £4-95 PP is way out of line. The large and heavy glass LnLs were £1 cheaper, and other large items have only been £1-95 recently.

To add to my review above, I've just been reading other reviews on QVC, which reminded me that I WOULD NEVER USE THESE OUTDOORS! IP44 means resistant to occasional splashing. Many of the reviews say they failed when used outdoors.

ALSO many said the batteries did not last long on auto. Mine have been switched off for years, and worked fine when I turned them on. But when on auto, there is bound to be a small drain from the battery just to power the sensor, so even if they hardly ever come on, the battery could go flat.

I've just watched the latest demo, this time they did NOT mention that it has to be completely dark. Perhaps they had a faulty one. In the first demo the BA was standing, this time she was sitting.
Mine come on in the daytime if I open the wardrobe door or go into the cupboard under the stairs to get something out. Obviously both are pitch black when the doors are closed but they spring into life as soon as the doors on either are opened. There is an option on mine for on, off or motion activated. Mine are set on motion activated.

When I had mine outside, prior to getting the security light, it was fine but was mounted on a partially covered area.
