How can anyone, even Peter, not be able to identify what is, or isn’t a chrono? I’m guessing it was a full calendar and he just counted the dials? I suppose my point is if they know so little, it’s really that they know nothing at all and the same must be true of the other stuff they sell…

I think the LOOK of some of those are ok. But I had an enamel dial Sugess Earth on the bench a few weeks ago. It was a standard SeaGull ST8000 inside, and it had stopped within 12 months of purchase. Two reasons - it was massively over-oiled, and there was a hair wound into the train. There’s...

    Same old, same old. Yawn!

Any Chinese made selly-telly watch is worthless after 5 years. And an awful lot of them won’t make it to 5 years. (I know you know this, Hammy - it’s really just to possibly save someone reading this from being taken in). I’ve seen so many of them. The cost of a service is way in excess of the...

A bit less even than that, I believe. The design work is already done. All these brands do, in the main, is to order a pre-existing design from China and have their brand name printed on the dial (and I’ve seen even that done so badly that the name would come off as soon as it was touched - it...

That word ‘used’ in the context of a gimp mask….🤮 There aren’t enough antibiotics in the world……😬

That utterly meaningless phrase ‘Swiss Design’. I think it’s disgusting. It’s relying on the fact that people won’t realise it isn’t ’Swiss Made’ or even ‘Swiss Mechanism’. To me, it’s a shining signal that the makers are intending to deceive. In fairness, the description says ‘Japanese’, but I...

Me too, Jazzy. When my MS is bad, I can’t basically do anything and this forum, and its collection of funny, committed, snarky and wonderful people is, literally a life-saver for me. I never know when my hands won’t move whether that’s it and they’ll never move again - which as a watchmaker is...

I’m assuming it isn’t insolvent. I think continuing to trade whilst insolvent is a criminal offence… It seems to me like insolvency would’ve been the inevitable outcome if they’d carried on. So, to avoid that, they pulled their biggest expense in order to stay solvent as a company. That’s my...

There are a number of factors at play here, to be honest with you. If I recall correctly, this thread started like others on our forum, with our regulars - duke, muttley, jazzy, herring, lord, hammy, samki, galesgal, myself, and the others giving our usual blend of support, teasing, light...

    What do you buy?

From your posting history, Saintslad, I can see that ‘constructive posts’ are definitely not something you do. So let’s not have hypocritical snarky comments about others, eh? That seeming to be your own ‘stock in trade’. And Duke has pointed out a few times - what is your other account?

Thanks Alex. But it’s not really Kevski. As regards mechanism, provenance and lifespan, Vostok are one of the most open and transparent shopping telly products. And decent enough watches as well. I do feel that Kevin tries hard to get things right (although his regular surprise at a revealed...

Hi Alex, For me, it’s not so much that there’s extra i want to know, i just want to see less of the exaggeration, and the very dubious claims about provenance. Most of the watches sold on selly telly are fashion items. And made in China. There’s nothing wrong with either of those statements...

My dad did exactly the same. I remember one day trying to use a couple of sheets, fresh from the box, as tracing paper (we’d done sone tracing in ‘art’ at infant school). It took days to get rid of that smell. And the ink blotted and blurred. And went through the paper. Even at the time i...

It’s quite crafty, to be honest. To label as ‘Swiss Movement’, the movement must have undergone technical development in Switzerland, be inspected by the manufacturer in Switzerland and at least 60% of the manufacturing costs be generated in Switzerland). Now, remember that labour costs in...

Absolutely right. I have yet to work on a Chinese mechanism without random tooling marks, and it’s common to find random fingerprints and even hairs. They nearly all use plastic spacer rings. You just don’t get that in any Swiss, German or Japanese mechanism.
