Following on from Prince Harry handing out free HIV self tests last week in Hackney enabling people to know their status on their own terms in just 15 minutes, BioSure, the manufacturers of the first CE marked HIV self test, have partnered with Shopping Nation for another world first this World AIDS Day.

Over 35 million people have died of AIDS and it remains the biggest killer of young women globally. In the UK, over 100,000 people are living with HIV and although statistics are dramatically improving, a possible 1 in 6 of those people don't know they have it. But the fact is that HIV is completely treatable IF you know. And as HIV doesn’t show any symptoms, the only way to know is to test.

So what do we have to do to get people testing? The ‘Don’t Die of Ignorance’ adverts from the early 90’s still resonate with many of us, so first we have to make everyone aware that ‘HIV is now 3 letters, not a sentence’. Next step is to let them know how easy it is to test and take ownership of their own status on their own terms, but most importantly we have to get them talking and breakdown the taboo that still shrouds HIV. This is something that BioSure and Shopping Nation believe with a passion. What could be possibly be a better platform than a two hour live broadcast, which will be simultaneously broadcast globally via Facebook and You Tube, with live testing, expert advice, chatting and phone in discussion?

Film and TV actress Nicola Kelleher and Jeremy Edwards of Hollyoaks and Holby City fame are presenting the live programme on 1st December, along with a panel of experts on the newly launched Shopping Nation. Michael Nugent who found out his HIV positive status by self testing is also taking part. “Self testing might have literally saved my life as I’d only had a negative clinical test a few months before and might not have tested again for ages. I’m now successfully on treatment which means the virus is undetectable, so my own health is protected but most importantly I can’t pass it on. I’m back in a happy place, with family and friends around me who give their love and support. It’s always better to know, the alternative is not even worth considering.”

There are lots of HIV testing choices around, but self testing is the only way to test wherever and whenever you want and find out your result while you wait, very similar to a pregnancy test really.  The BioSURE HIV Self Test needs only a fraction of a drop of blood, is over 99.7% accurate and gives the user their result almost instantly.

Brigette Bard, founder and CEO of BioSure is fully immersed in driving the conversation globally - "Launching an innovative technology into unchartered waters has given us the incredible opportunity to gain unique insight and understanding into what self-testing can offer. Apart from the obvious, of knowing your status conveniently without the involvement of anyone else, being able to make informed choices and assuming responsibility for your own testing is hugely empowering. We have faced extraordinary scepticism, which we have overcome by generating overwhelming evidence around the simplicity of our test and that ultimately people do want to test themselves for HIV’.

So the final message; People need to know that the only reason to be afraid of HIV now is if you don’t know your status. We have the tools at our fingertips to end this epidemic and create the world’s first AIDS free generation.

Shopping Nation has now ceased trading, the BioSURE HIV Self Test con be obtained now direct from the manufacturer
